Built in 1924, 680 North Lake Shore Drive spans an entire city block in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago. This 29-story art-deco building is bounded by Lake Shore Drive to the east, McClurg Court to the west, East Erie Street to the south, and East Huron Street to the north. Its prime location places it just a block away from Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the downtown Northwestern University Campus.
Originally named the American Furniture Mart, the building’s two halves were designed separately: the eastern half by Raeder, George C. Nimmons, and Max Dunning; and the western half by Nimmons and Dunning. Upon its completion, 680 North Lake Shore Drive held the title of the largest building in the world.
Over 50 years later, the building was transformed from its initial use as a furniture mart into a mixed-use space, now housing 160 residential units, approximately 65,000 square feet of retail space, and around 420,000 square feet of office space. 680 North Lake Shore Drive contributes to the charm of Chicago’s upscale Streeterville neighborhood, standing as a testament to how classic building design and architecture can coexist harmoniously with modern skyscrapers.
